GEN AI: No Man's Land

Set in a shattered future, a hunter and his target clash over the fate of a mysterious child — whose humanity changes everything.

What began as a simple test to create consistency with Runway’s Gen-4 References turned into the most ambitious and complex AI project I’ve tackled so far.

It is not really short film but rather the effort to create something slightly challenging in the AI space.

One continuous, long scene at the same consistent location with the same consistent characters, using a wide range of camera angles and shot types to create tension.

I often talk about the lack of consistency in AI - and we’re still not quite there yet. But Gen-4 References, with its ability to generate new camera angles from previous frames, is a big step in the right direction.

Gen AI: Carcosa

Inspired by the HBO’s new season of “True Detective” I generated this mood film to test out the multi motion brush features of Gen AI video platform “Runway”.

Tools:
Midjourney V6
Krea.ai
Runway
Adobe Photoshop Beta
Adobe After Effects Beta
Topaz

Gen AI: Superposition

A janitor dozes off during his shift, only to be jolted awake by an unexplained disturbance. As he wanders through the empty building, he encounters eerie hallways and a strange anomaly. What starts as a routine inspection soon leads him to a mysterious surprise.

I find it more interesting to create an AI short that tells a cohesive story rather than just a series of vignettes or something that represents a movie-trailer. I aimed for consistency in characters and environments while also bringing a character to life with human expressions. Even with all the latest tools this is still challenging and didn’t always work.

Gen AI: The Hybrids

I tried to push photorealism as much as possible with these portraits. It’s actually not that easy to force midjourney to create an appealing blend of the human and animal as Midjourney wants to generate one or the other.

I created and instagram account with these portraits that became somewhat popular.

Gen AI: Sound of Silence

Inspired by the recent wave of excellent assassin and spy content, I wanted to create something different from the usual sci-fi and fantasy worlds often seen in AI projects.

Originally, a friend of mine, who is an actor, was the protagonist in this AI-generated short. However, once it was completed, he wasn’t entirely sure it was the right move. So, I had to swap his face with someone else at the last minute. Now I am young, fit and have luscious hair. Everybody wins. Thanks AI.

GEn AI: Honda

This AI generated film is a fake spec ad and not an official Honda advertisement. Hondas tagline “The Power of Dreams” got me thinking about dreamlike landscapes and how easy it is to generate those with AI.

Gen AI: The Hood

One weekend I rewatched Kevin Costner’s "Prince of Thieves" and finally got around trying out the the latest “Runway ML” features. Higher resolution and higher fidelity. Wow.

The result of some hours of tinkering with different settings and adding particle effects in After Effects was this trailer for some dystopian version of “Robin Hood”. Maybe?

Gen AI: Abstracts

The multitude of tools, options and settings to play with make it increasingly time-consuming to create these images. But it’s also incredibly exciting and satisfying.

Here are some examples of some rather random personal work.

Gen AI: Beneath the Ice

I created this mood film to pitch a possible horror-short-film-series to a new AI film start-up.

They liked the “Werner Herzog meets The Thing” vibes and it looks like we are producing 5 short episodes set in this world.

This is a mix of “dream machine” shots by Luma AI in the first half and “Gen-3” by Runway in the second

Creatures. They are shy and difficult to work with.
